Territorial Defence Forces*
*
Under the Communist regime that Marshal Tito established in the Yugoslav*
Federation, each Republic had its own organised force for defence, that would*
supplement the Yugoslav People's Army (YPA). The TDF was meant to also act*
independently and remain in occupied parts of the country and force an*
invader to concentrate on his communications and supply lines - in essence,*
guerilla war on a national army level.*
*
With the disintegration of the Yugoslav Federation, starting in 1991 in*
Slovenia, many of these units resisted the YPA, taking up arms along the*
lines of ethnicity.*
